Retractable Leashes

Retractable leashes should be used with caution. Because they allow dogs to get relatively far away from their owners, the dogs are less readily controlled. If a car or bicycle comes along, you must quickly reel the dog in. This takes some practice to master.

Be very careful if you have your dog on a retractable leash near small sized children. Recently, a toddler was nearly strangled when her dog, in excitement, ran around and around her -- wrapping his leash around her neck. Only the quick action by the adults present saved her life.
